The Holmes Family

The O'Hanley Family

The O'Hanley's were originally from Co. Roscommon, Ireland.  According to family legend plus other information I have gathered, they might have gone over to Scotland as missionaries in the 18th century.  They settled in South Uist, Scotland (part of the Hebrides Islands), left there in 1849, and settled in the Parkhill area of Ontario known as Bornish.

What was the O'Hanley farm in Bornish, Ontario, as seen today.

This is the O'Hanley tree as far back as we've managed to go so far...

1. John O'Hanley (b. 1795, Stoneybridge, South Uist, Scotland - d. 1875 at the age of 80)

married Mary MacIntyre (b. about 1795, South Uist, Scotland - died 1877 at the age of 86.)

     Their children were:

        Kirsty O'Hanley (b. 1824, Stoneybridge, South Uist, Scotland - d. ?)

        Neil O'Hanley (b. 1827, Stoneybridge, South Uist, Scotland - d.?)

        Marion O'Hanley (b. 1828, Stoneybridge, South Uist, Scotland - d. ?)

        Michael O'Hanley (b. 1831, Stoneybridge, South Uist, Scotland - d. 1903 at the age of 72)

        Janet O'Hanley (b. 1832, Stoneybridge, South Uist, Scotland - d. ?)

        John O'Hanley (b. 1833, Stoneybridge, South Uist, Scotland -d. 1917)

* Note - another person was listed along with this family, a Donald O'Hanley, either a son or brother of John O'Hanley (1795-1875) - also was noted that some O'Hanley's moved to Michigan.)  Also, John O'Hanley's father may have been named Neil.  The family's name in Scotland is spelled "O'Henley" in the census records.

2. John O'Hanley (son of John and Mary) (1833-1917)

   married Mary Ann McDonald (1842 - 1884)

        Their children were:

Mary Ann (1866 - 1910) m. John B. McDonald (had six children plus 7th  child Hanlon McDonald.)

Annie (1869 - 1894)  m. Archibald Morrison (died after the birth of her second child, had two daughters.)

Hannah (1870 - 1937) m. Roderick McPhee (children were Hugh, John Lawrence, Joseph Neil, Louis Ignatius, Sarah Anne, and Ronald Francis.)

Angus (1872 - 1935) m. Pearl Anderson (children were John Louis, Margaret Clare, Mary (died age 8), Kathleen, Anna Jean, Marion Teresa, and Elizabeth ("Betty" 1929-1942.)

        John (1875 - 1938) m. Agnes O'Donnell (1875 - 1943).  they had no children.

Neil (1877 - 19??) m. Annie Prendergast (moved to Chicago, became an undertaker.)

Ronald Donald (1879 - 1953?) moved to Chicago, also became an undertaker.  Married Mary Ann Catherine Healy (children were James Healy, Mary Elizabeth, Jual Ann (b. 1920), Eileen Loretta, and Agnes (1926 - 1934.)

Sarah Josephine "Josie" (1883 - 1941) m. Peter McKinnon (children were Cecilia, Patricia Mary, Mary Josephine, Effie Christina, Donald Gerald, Joseph Alexander)

3. John Louis "Jack" (son of Angus O'Hanley and Pearl Anderson) b. 1914 - d. 1973.  Married Anna Adams (1922 - 1985, was a WWII European orphan raised in Ontario by an orphanage run by a Catholic religious order.)  Their children were Jean Ann, John Angus, Geraldine, Monica, Teresa, Neil Joseph and Catherine.

I also have a little information on our MacDonald side....

Angus (1815 - 1881) was of Dunganichy, Benbecula, Scotland.  His father is possibly Ranald MacDonald.

Angus married Ann MacCormack (b.1820, Uachdar, Benbecula, Scotland, d. 1852, Bornish, Ontario).  Her parents were John MacCormack and Christina MacPherson.

Angus and Ann's children were:

Ranald (b. 1841 - d. 1879)

Mary Ann (b. 1842 - d. 1884, m. John O'Hanley)

John (b. 1842 (possibly a twin to Mary Ann?) - d. ?, but I am guessing here that he died before 1845 and that's why there are two sons named John)

John. C. (b. 1845 - d. ?)

Kirsty (dates unknown)

After Ann MacCormack MacDonald's death, it is said that Angus remarried, a woman named Sarah and had yet another son named John.  It is said that John was born in 1852, which is confusing as Ann died that same year.  Where this Sarah and John fit in is not quite know.
